The Lady Of Burma

by Richard Shannon
with Liana Mau Tan Gould as Aung San Suu Kyi

directed by Richard Shannon and Owen Lewis designed by Polly Sullivan lighting by Tim Mascall sound by John Mills

Touring April - June 2008 - see tour site for details.

The inspirational true story of Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi is told in this compelling solo performance about the life of the only Nobel Peace Prize winner who is also a political prisoner. Despite being head of the democratically-elected political party, Burma' s military junta have kept Suu Kyi under house arrest for over a decade.

This powerful performance has already been made sell-out appearances at the Edinburgh festival and the Old Vic in London. Regardless of what you know or think about Burmese politics, this show is an unmissable hymn to the power of the human spirit in the quest for freedom.

'Extraordinary... unforgettable. Gould's performance is one of quiet intensity. A compelling tribute to all those engaged in Burma's continuing struggle for liberty, and to a truly inspiring human being.' The Times, November 2007

'Shocking, inspirational, and vividly performed by Liana Mau Tan Gould.' Financial Times, November 2007

'Liana Mau Tan Gould is superbly talented at inhabiting a host of support characters, and as the Lady of Burma, she, like the play itself, lifts the bar when describing with quiet precision the horror her country has witnessed.' Time Out, November 2007

'Tells it all - and catches the pain and wry humour inside that tiny frame and strong, wise face.' The Times, August 2007

'A clever, effective script that requires little in the way of prior knowledge of Burma to thoroughly entrance you.' Metro, August 2007

'Rarely is a show so powerful.' **** The Independent, October 2006
